Road Races:
  • 28 May: Celebrate America 10k
This was held in Alpharetta, GA and my number was 82. I came in 333rd out of 361 (92nd percentile), and 11th out of 12th in my age group (60 <= age <= 64). All times for both men and women were grouped together. They got the times wrong though. They have me finishing in 1:08:29, but I have my time as 1:09:57 which is what is represented in the statistics above. If there were any way for me to justify the lesser time, believe me, I would.

  • 2 June: Run the Rails 5k
This was held in Buford, GA and my number was 2170. This is a local race and no results are available. The course was closed-loop and fairly flat. I ran this race barefoot, and this is the first time I've done that in a race. Think I will start running all future races barefoot.

  • 9 June: S.W.A.T. Trot 5k
This was held in Lilburn, GA and my number was 215. This is a local race put on by the Gwinnett police department and no results are available. The course was closed-loop, oddly shaped (through a sub division) and fairly flat. I had intended to run barefoot, but since this was an evening race and the temperature was 85 F. it seemed to me that the roadway would be too hot.

  • 16 June: Possum Trot 10k
This was held in Roswell, GA, starting and finishing at the Chattachoohee Nature Center and my number was 1107. This is a great flat course which runs along the Chattahoochee river. I had intended to run barefoot, but thought the surface was perhaps a bit too coarse, so I chickened out. I came in 509 of 594 in the men's division and 19 of 28 in my age group. Overall I was 762 of 998 which is the 76th percentile.

  • 23 June: Magnolia Run 4m
This was held in Atlanta, GA, starting and finishing at the Perimeter Mall, and my number was 904. I ran this race barefoot, and saw one other barefoot runner. I came in 176 of 252 in the men's division and 9 of 17 in my age group. Overall I was 266 of 506 which is the 53rd percentile.

  • 4 July: Peachtree Road Race 10k
The largest 10k in the world with 55,000 entrants. My number was 50852. The weather was good and a good time was had by all. One still has to run around too many walkers, so my time was not as good as it could have been. The start time was 7:30 AM, but group 5 didn't get started until 8:05, same as last year. I intend to qualify for the first group for next year's run. Had the usual conversations about my barefoot running.

  • 14 July: Breakaway 5k
Held in Walnut Grove, GA, this was an inaugural run, starting with a half mile downhill, which of course means that it ended up with a half mile uphill run. There were a couple of transition points from one type of surface to another which had pebbles, which didn't make my bare feet real happy. I was number 16. I should have run faster, but I was always worried about the final hill. I came in 5 of 12 for my age group, 61 of 90 of men's group and 79 of 142 overall.

  • 4 August: Old Soldiers Day 10k
Held in Alpharetta, GA, and starts at the Alpharetta swimming pool in Wills park. My number was 60. This was a combination 5k/10k race, with 305 in the 5k and 265 in the 10k.. The first half was on city screets and the second half was on a running trail within the park itself. Didn't do very well compared to everyone else. I came in 9 of 15 for my age group, 155 of 178 among males, and 206 of 265 overall.

  • 11 August: Dinosaur Dash 5k
Held in Atlanta, GA at the Perimeter Mall next to Dillards in the middle of a serious heat wave. It is basically a flat course, but these legs found a hill 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the race. There was a good turnout and a nice race packet afterwards. My number was 135. I came in 4 of 10 for my age group, 145 of 271 of men's group and 202 of 493 overall.

  • 18 August: Bulldog Dash 5k
Held in Suwanee, GA at the North Gwinnett High School, who are known as the Bulldogs. It is basically a flat course, with a couple of gentle hills. There was a good turnout, with over 400 runners. It finished with a lap at their high school track. I came in 3 of 8 for my age group (>=60), 178 of 236 of men's group and 257 of 410 overall. I was number 43, and actually got third place in my age group, and got a cute bulldog paperweight.

  • 25 August: Stonemill 5k Road Race
Held in Suwanee, GA at the Stonemill church. Nice course with a couple of hills. There were over 400 entrants and my number was 421. Unfortunatly, the results only reflect those who turned in their timecards afterwards (only 204 of 400+), which skews the comparison. So the following only reflects my time in comparison to this group. I came in 2 of 7 in the 60+ (actually >= 60) age group, 55 of 119 among men, and 79 of 204 overall. So, I managed to get second place in the 60+ group which is reflected in a little trophy that the cats are still trying to climb up to get.

  • 3 September: U.S. 10k Classic
Held in Atlanta, GA starting from the Cumberland Mall, this course is known for its many hills and large turnout. Unfortunately, as seems to be the case in every large event, there were the usual walkers who get in the front, in the way, and who you have to run around. It seems that after every hill there was another one, so my time wasn't very good, but it wasn't expected to be. I was number 5203 and came in 1410 of 1877 among males, 41 of 83 in age group (60 <= age <= 98 (wonder how those > 98 did)) and 1875 of 2821 overall. One thing to bear in mind is that there were over 12,000 runners, but only 2821 elected to wear timing chips to have their times recorded.

  • 8 September: Lekotek 4M
Starting from Georgia Perimeter College in Dunwoody, GA, this course is rather hilly. I ran barefoot, but won't do that again. The Dunwoody streets are ok, but the last half mile of the run is on the property of the college, and the surface is extremely rough, with pebbles strewn about in places. I had to stop a couple of times to pull pebbles out of my feet. I will definitely have to run shod next time. I was number 38 and ran a horrible time, because of that stopping. Unbelievably, I got a third place plaque in the mail nine days later.

  • 15 September: Doug Kessler Lightning 10k
Starting from a Target store in Sandy Springs, GA, this course is more hilly than I had been led to believe. I didn't think it was well organized. The directions on the web site were wrong, which caused much confusion with those trying to get to the race. The race started about 5 minutes late, and the only indication that the race had started was the movement of the participants. The course surface seemed a bit rough, so I chickened out and wore my water shoes instead of going barefoot. I would run this again, but without the expectation of a flat course. I was number 343, came in 331 of 402 among males, 15 of 23 in age group (60 <= age <= 64), and 494 of 669 total. They did use a DAG chip which was nice. Definitely not one of my better runs. I don't think I was in a good mindset after all the trouble trying to find the place.

  • 29 September: Buckhead Sizzler 10k
This is a rather flat course, starting at the Chamblee Marta station in Chamblee, GA, a suburb of Atlanta, and goes down Peachtree Industrial Blvd. into Buckhead. It is a great course, with just a couple of gradual hills. I did better than expected, but one of those hills still kind of took my legs away around mile 4.5. The bus was supposed to just take people to the nearest Marta station (Lenox), but contrary to the information they published there were actually busses to take people back to the starting point, causing much confusion. Additionally, people had purchased Marta tickets unnecessarily, including me. I think I may have given up on the idea of running barefoot. The roadways in this area just have surfaces that are too coarse, and this ends up costing me time. If the roads were better, then I would prefer to run barefoot, but I am going to give it a rest for now. I was number 301 came in 605 of 765 among males, 13 of 24 in age group (60 <= age <= 64), and 885 of 1288 total.

  • 27 October: Silver Comet 1/2 M
This is a great half marathon starting in Mableton, GA. It is run on surface streets for the first mile and a half and then moves onto the Silver Comet Trail. It is very well organized and well supported by the community, as evidenced by the large turnout. The weather was perfect. Only problem is that I wasn't quite over the flu, so my nose was running the entire time, and I was coughing so much that I must have sounded like a smoker. As a result, instead of improving on my training time by 30 seconds a mile, I was over 40 seconds a mile slower. But still, I'm glad I ran and look forward to doing it again next year (without the flu). Busses were available to take runners back to the parking area from the finish line. I was number 447, came in 572 of 635 among males, 12 of 24 in age group (60 <= age <= 64), and 1056 of 1334 total.

  • 22 November: Atlanta Half Marathon 1/2 M
This is a half marathon starting in Chamblee, GA and held every Thanksgiving. Took the bus from Fleet Feet in Johns Creek to the starting point, and back again after it was over. The weather was 57 degrees F at the start, and it rained heavily a few times throughout the run. I could have managed without the rain. The race was well organized by the Atlanta Track Club as was the transportation to/from the race by the nice people at Fleet Feet. It does have its share of hills. It uses most of the course from the Buckhead Sizzler and the Peachtree Road Race. I ran slower than desired, but hills tend to do such things to me. If I had a preference, it would be for an option to have the race packets mailed, instead of having to go down to the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead. I should be able to beat this time next year, but I think I'll be running the Philadelphia Marathon instead, which is held the Sunday before this race. I was number 2804, came in 2850 of 3437 among males, 50 of 84 in age group (60 <= age <= 64), and 4839 of 6431 overall.

  • 15 December: Jingle Jog 5k
This race was held in Atlanta, at Costco on Peachtree Dunwoody, just outside the Perimeter. Had no clue there would be so many participants. I was thinking maybe 500 max, but it turns out there were between 5000 and 6000. Temperature was 51 and it was cloudy and windy. Note to self, get there a good half hour earlier next year. Missed tying my PR by a second per mile. I did have a cold though, and had to breathe mostly through my mouth. I was cruising along great for the first mile, and then I saw THE HILL. Sigh..... I was number 711 (maybe I should start a chain....). I don't know if any results will be posted since no tear-off strips were on the numbers.
